Straumann PURE™ Ceramic: the metal-free implant

White zirconia, with a smaller evidence base than titanium

PURE Ceramic is Straumann's zirconia implant. The 2024 FDA summary describes tissue-level monotype and two-piece designs with a large-grit sandblasted and acid-etched ceramic surface (ZLA®) and a 1.8 mm machined neck.1

What the evidence says about zirconia

Systematic review

Systematic reviews comparing zirconia and titanium implants report results that depend on the outcome and follow-up studied; the long-term evidence base for zirconia is smaller. 345

We do not describe ceramic implants as 'healthier' or 'biologically superior'. Current evidence doesn't support that as a general claim. Choose ceramic because it suits your preferences and your dentist's plan.

Monotype or two-piece

In the monotype design, the abutment is part of the implant. The two-piece design has a separate abutment and an internal connection based on features of Straumann's Tissue Level Standard Plus and Bone Level implants.1 A two-piece design gives the restorative team more flexibility; a monotype avoids a join between implant and abutment.

The Straumann Guarantee's Lifetime Plus provisions apply to PURE Ceramic implants, including a treatment compensation in case of implant fracture, with an amount that varies by market.6
