Straumann BLX vs BLC: why does Straumann make both?

BLX and BLC are both bone-level implants in the iEXCEL system and share the TorcFit connection and prosthetics. They differ in body shape and thread design, which reflects different clinical priorities.

What actually differs
  • Same system, connection, material and surfaces.1
  • BLX is fully tapered with a coarse, deep thread; BLC is apically tapered with a much finer thread.1
  • It is not 'premium vs budget'. They are different tools for different situations.

Why both exist

A deep, coarse thread is designed to cut and grip, which suits soft bone and fresh sockets. A finer thread with a slim apex is designed for efficient insertion and less invasive preparation, according to Straumann.2 Because both share the TorcFit connection, the restorative parts are the same whichever the surgeon chooses.
