Looking after your implants

Implants don't decay, but the gum and bone around them can become inflamed. Daily cleaning, regular professional maintenance and managing risk factors are the biggest influences on how long implants last.

In short
  • Brush twice a day and clean between teeth and under bridges.
  • Professional check-ups as advised.
  • Bleeding or swelling around an implant needs attention.

What the evidence says

Consensus / guideline

The EFP S3 clinical guideline on peri-implant diseases centres prevention on oral hygiene, regular supportive care and managing risk factors such as smoking. 1

Independent clinical study

In 4,591 Straumann implants followed in private practice for up to 10 years, bone loss was minimal for most implants, but some showed advanced bone loss, and bleeding around the implant was linked to greater bone loss. 2

Everyday care

  • Soft toothbrush around the implant crown and gum line.
  • Interdental brushes or water flosser under bridges.
  • Professional cleaning and check-ups as your dentist advises.
  • See your dentist quickly if the gum bleeds, swells or feels sore.
